چکیده

This empirical study of opportunities for learning in a hospital contributes to the discussion of learning at work and particularly the notion of workplace learning as a horizontal community. Horizontal communities, although focused as such in existing literature, are found to be scarce in this study due to division of labor and physical layout. The horizontal communities seldom reach the in situ domain, and contrary to what is proclaimed in the normative literature, the horizontal interaction seems to be further afar from the task performance itself than what is labeled here as vertical communities appear to be. 1 Etty R. Optimising the community-based approach to healthcare improvement: Comparative case studies of the clinical community model in practice

Community-based approaches to healthcare improvement are receiving increasing attention. Such approaches could offer an infrastructure for efficient knowledge-sharing and a potent means of influencing behaviours, but their potential is yet to be optimised. After briefly reviewing challenges to community-based approaches, we describe in detail the clinical community model. Through exploring clin...

Shading facilitates sessile invertebrate dominance in the rocky subtidal Gulf of Maine.

Dramatic shifts in community composition occur between vertical and horizontal rocky surfaces in subtidal environments worldwide, yet the forces mediating this transition are poorly understood. Vertical rock walls are often covered by lush, diverse communities of sessile suspension-feeding invertebrates, while adjacent horizontal substrates are dominated by algae, or corals in the tropics. Mult...

Burrowing behavior of freshwater mussels in experimentally manipulated communities

We experimentally manipulated mussel community structure and observed mussel burrowing behavior in mesocosms held in a greenhouse. Vertical positions, vertical movements, and horizontal movements of Actinonaias ligamentina, Amblema plicata, Fusconaia flava, and Obliquaria reflexa were recorded during five 11-d trials. Community structure was manipulated by constructing communities with 11 diffe...

Spatial distribution of fungal communities in a coastal grassland soil

In grasslands, saprotrophic fungi, including basidiomycetes, are major decomposers of dead organic matter, although spatial distributions of their mycelial assemblages are little described. The aim of this study was to characterise the scale and distribution of saprotrophic fungal communities in a coastal grassland soil using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP). Soil fung...

The use of directional traps for the assessment of short-term phenanthrene effects upon soil springtail communities.

Directional traps, both horizontal and vertical, were used to assess the behavioural impact of phenanthrene application on soil springtail communities. Avoidance was not detected. Rather, a vertical attraction of the dominant species, Folsomia manolachei, was demonstrated, as well as a decrease in horizontal movements of Lepidocyrtus lanuginosus, another important species mainly captured at the...
